Underground Parking vs. Rooftop Parking

It is well known that rooftop parking requires less space since you are parking on the same plot of land but above your head. The same can be said for underground parking: you are parking on the same plot, just beneath your feet. Rooftop parking offers several advantages, with lower costs being the most significant.

The Netherlands has become much more expensive to develop, as engineering firm Arcadis has concluded. This is partly due to the effects of the pandemic, stricter environmental regulations, and a shortage of suitable locations. At the same time, there are numerous building plans, all requiring a great deal of space—space that is already scarce. Choices must be made, even when it comes to parking.

More Cost-Effective on the Roof

Underground parking is significantly more expensive than rooftop parking. This is because the entire structure must be designed to support it. Additionally, underground parking increases costs due to the need to manage groundwater and retaining walls. Moreover, an underground car park always requires lighting, even during the day. The term “rooftop parking” speaks for itself: you park on the roof of a building, efficiently using the space already available. Only the (roof) structure needs to be adapted, and a ramp needs to be constructed. This results in significant cost savings. Lighting is only necessary when it’s dark.

Combining with Green and Solar Solutions

Unlike underground parking, rooftop parking allows for multifunctional use of space. Rooftop parking areas can easily be combined with green spaces, including vegetation. They can also incorporate solar panels, for instance, as a canopy above the parking spaces. In this way, the same space can serve multiple purposes, all of which are urgently needed.

Comfort and safety

The experience of parking plays an important role. A pleasant parking experience sets the tone for shopping trips. Comfortable and safe parking facilities are crucial for shopping centres as well as residential complexes. On a rooftop, you always have natural light, fresh air, and expansive views. When combined with greenery, this also creates a calming atmosphere.

Views
Aesthetics matter too! Expansive views can serve as an added attraction. Who doesn’t enjoy a beautiful view? From a height, everything looks different—more beautiful and more interesting. It allows you to experience your familiar surroundings in a completely new way. A free bonus when parking on the roof.
