In 2004, the Luma Foundation was founded in Switzerland with the aim of promoting the activities of artists and organisations active in the fields of the visual arts, photography, publishing and the film and documentary industry.
Campus Parc des Ateliers
In 2013, the same Foundation launched Luma Arles, an institution that offers artists an opportunity to experiment with the production and presentation of new work, in close collaboration with other artists, scientists and innovators. To make this possible, the campus Parc des Ateliers was developed on an extensive former industrial site in the city of Arles in Southern France.
Tower designed by Frank Gehry
The focal point of this campus will be a 56 metre-high tower, designed by Frank Gehry. The building will house workshop and seminar spaces, research facilities and various studios. The remarkable shape of the tower block reflects the shape of the rugged mountain ranges of the local area.
Expertise from Zoontjens
The tower block will be finished with eight different rooftop terraces, on different levels. As in the case of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, the expertise of Zoontjens has been called in for the laying of the multilevel rooftop terraces. The client has opted for the DNS®Large system and a special format of tailor-made slab with a coating layer of the client’s own design. A start will be made on the laying of the first slabs later this year.
