15 residential buildings, 265 homes, parking, and plenty of green outdoor space. That is Oranjekade Helmond, The Netherlands. This green outdoor space sits on top of the parking garage, creating a raised green courtyard. We contributed to this large construction project!
Stylish architecture
Oranjekade alternates stylish warehouse-style architecture with contemporary residential buildings. The plan was designed by several architectural firms. Notable features include the extension of the EDAH building, wide staircases, and the car-free zone along the canal. Additionally, all sides of the homes have the appearance of a front facade. The architectural firms divided the residential blocks among themselves to create a diverse and rich whole. The 15 residential blocks are divided into two clusters by a (walking) corridor. The entire construction is being managed by Ban Bouw.
Raised green courtyards
A remarkable aspect of the plan is the parking garage. It was built at ground level but is hardly noticeable. On top, large green courtyards have been created. As a resident or visitor, you wouldn’t even realise that all of this is on a roof.
Collaboration
Du Pré Groenprojecten is the rooftop landscaper for the entire project on the courtyards. The design of this rooftop garden required the right layout. For the roof terraces that are connected to the homes, the expertise of Zoontjens was brought in. Together with the client and Du Pré, we explored the best solution to ensure a perfect connection to the window frames, taking into account the different heights, weight, and the integration with the planting.
Combination of Hardscaping and Greenery
We are using Dreen®Nxt on DNS® here. This allows us to precisely determine the required height to connect to the facade. Du Pré Groenprojecten installs a corten steel border against our system, after which they continue with the substrate for the intensive rooftop garden. This way, the roof slab system blends seamlessly into the rooftop garden. The planting plan for this rooftop garden follows Griffioen’s Green to Colour concept.
Ideal living
With this new development in Helmond, residents enjoy the ideal location: surrounded by nature, yet right in the city centre. The rooftop gardens make a significant contribution to creating a pleasant living environment! The first cluster is now fully completed and occupied. The second cluster is progressing quickly and will be completed later this year.
