An icon. That’s how we can confidently describe World Trade Centre Rotterdam. Not only because of its striking appearance, but also because of its rich history. To make and keep the building future-proof, it has undergone a large-scale revitalisation. Including a fantastic roof terrace.
Phased revitalisation
The revitalisation of WTC Rotterdam was divided into more than 20 sub-projects, carried out over several years, based on a master plan developed by BiermanHenket. It’s a stunning project, completed this year by contractor Van Wijnen.
Pleasant collaboration
One of these sub-projects is the convention centre: a full-service concept for trade fairs, meetings, gatherings or events, complete with a rooftop terrace. Roofing contractor Oranjedak was involved in this project and called upon Zoontjens’ technical expertise for the paving on the new rooftop terrace.

How do you integrate skylights into a roof terrace?
This rooftop terrace is about 400 square metres in size and incorporates 11 large, round, flat skylights. These provide natural daylight to the entrance area below. The challenge on this project is to ensure that the rooftop paving system fits tightly and smoothly around the skylights.

Round connections
For this project, we used the Dreen®Ceramica system with slab dimensions of 120 x 60 cm. To get the system exactly to the height of the skylight, we raised it using our DNS® system. To follow the curves of the skylight, we cut each tile precisely to a round shape. A job requiring precision. With a detailed installation plan prepared in advance, we were well equipped for the task.
Ideal location for business drinks
The rooftop terrace is beautifully furnished with round benches around the skylights and lush greenery. It has become a unique place at a height of 30 metres in the heart of the city. The perfect location for business drinks after a meeting, consultation or event.
